Communicating how gender statistics can change lives

Women Count is UN Women’s strategy for achieving gender equality and empowering women across the globe. The gender data programme aims to create a radical shift in how gender statistics are used, created, and shared, ensuring that every woman and girl is counted and visible. We worked with UN Women in New York to create a dynamic and optimistic brand identity system that brings their important work to life.

Challenge

In 2015 the United Nations General Assembly adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the ambitious vision of creating peace and prosperity for the planet by 2030. Women Count hope that by investing in gender statistics, they will be able to better monitor and implement the SDGs, ensuring that no woman or girl gets left behind as we work together to build a safer, more prosperous world.

We needed to consider how the branding system would work and how a visual identity for Women Count would support and align with UN Women. The expression of the identity would also need to capture the unique mission of the programme itself – creating better data brings the world closer to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals and achieving gender equality.

Solution

We created an impactful visual identity system that challenges the standard tropes of data analysis. The identity is upbeat and commanding – a far cry from the stuffy world of statistics. The 17 colourful bars of the logo represent the 17 colour coded SDGs. The bar-chart-shaped logomark makes data front and center within the identity.

The solution includes a unique typography application and a brand graphic palette that creates ownership of communications and alignment to the UN Women brand. Just as Women Count aims for the transparency and accessibility of gender statistics, we created an identity that helps build awareness and credibility around the data, helping to promote gender equality and create meaningful change across the globe.
