Branding a Space for Progress and Innovation

by Martin Fanning

Offaly County Council set out an ambitious Climate Action Plan for 2024–2029, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and build a more sustainable future. Central to this vision is Tullamore, identified as a place where real, tangible change can happen. From transport improvements and building upgrades to renewable energy and biodiversity projects, the council wanted to create a local model for climate action. The challenge lay in bringing this vision to life, making it accessible, inspiring, and engaging for residents, businesses, and community groups.

We partnered with Offaly County Council to develop a name and brand identity that could translate policy into participation, capturing the project’s ambition while remaining grounded in the needs of the local community.

The result was the Tullamore Decarbonising Zone. Supported by the tagline “A Space for Progress and Innovation,” the identity reflects the council’s climate goals in a way that is simple, direct, and forward-looking.

A key concept behind the design is the ripple effect, the idea that small sustainable actions in Tullamore can lead to wider positive change. Visually, this is represented through the circular “zone” symbol, with Tullamore at the centre and ripples extending outward to the community and beyond.

We designed the new identity to work seamlessly across multiple touchpoints: social media, printed materials, events, and community outreach. Its optimistic and inclusive tone of voice avoids jargon and speaks directly to people, inviting them to play an active role. Whether encouraging new ideas or reporting progress, the communications are approachable, inspiring, and action-oriented.

By positioning Tullamore as a leader in Ireland’s climate transition, we created an identity that provides a platform for collaboration and participation. It demonstrates how local action can become a catalyst for national progress, while offering residents and businesses the tools and inspiration to contribute to a greener, healthier future.

The Tullamore Decarbonising Zone now stands as a symbol of progress. An open invitation for everyone to get involved in shaping a more sustainable future, starting locally and reaching far beyond.
